The integration challenge Tyro couldn't solve in-house
Tyro is one of Australia’s leading payments providers, trusted by thousands of hospitality businesses across cafes, restaurants and bars. Tyro’s customers needed a simple way for guests to order and pay directly from the table – but the execution wasn’t that straightforward.
Tyro’s existing POS and stock management systems weren’t integrated with any table-ordering solution. Venues were running disconnected platforms, with staff manually reconciling orders between systems. It created friction for customers, inefficiency for staff, and a ceiling on how well Tyro could serve the hospitality segment.
Tyro also lacked the API integration specialists needed to connect these systems properly. They needed a team that understood both the technology and the operational realities of running a hospitality venue – and they needed to move fast.
How we built the me&u platform
Restive provided a specialist development team, embedded directly into Tyro’s Sydney and Melbourne engineering teams – bringing the API integration expertise and product development capability Tyro needed without a lengthy resourcing process.
We designed and built the me&u platform: a table ordering and payments solution integrated directly with Tyro’s POS and inventory systems.
The platform was built on a Java and Kotlin backend, running a microservices architecture on AWS. The front end was built in React – giving the team the flexibility to iterate quickly on the customer-facing experience while the backend handled the reliability and scale demands of a payments product. APIs were built on GraphQL, enabling efficient, flexible data queries across the platform’s connected systems.
Rather than operating as an external vendor, our team worked inside Tyro’s product and engineering squads from day one – standing up in sprints, making decisions with Tyro’s leads, and moving at the pace the project demanded.

QR code ordering and customer experience
The customer-facing experience was built around simplicity: scan a QR code at the table, browse the menu, order and pay without waiting for staff.
We designed the interface to work across a range of device types and to minimise drop-off at every step of the ordering flow – from browsing through to payment confirmation. Every decision was optimised around the moments that matter: menu clarity, order accuracy, and a payment experience that just works.
POS and payments API integration
The API integration was the critical piece. me&u connects directly to Tyro’s POS systems and inventory management in real time. Orders flow through automatically, stock levels update as items are sold, and venue staff no longer need to manually reconcile across disconnected platforms.
Built on GraphQL APIs, the platform handles real-time data exchange between the customer-facing ordering interface and Tyro’s backend payments and POS infrastructure. The GraphQL layer gave us the flexibility to support the varied data requirements across different venue configurations without building brittle point-to-point integrations.
We built on top of Tyro’s existing payment infrastructure, so venues didn’t need a separate payments setup or merchant account. The transaction layer sits on Tyro’s EFTPOS and payments APIs – secure, reliable, and already trusted by the venues using it.
The platform was built to work across a range of venue configurations and POS setups – not just a single venue pilot, but a product Tyro could deploy at scale across its hospitality customer base across Australia.
The outcome
me&u gave Tyro a competitive, fully integrated table ordering and payments product – built on top of their existing platform and ready to deploy at scale.
Venues got a cleaner customer experience and fewer operational headaches. Tyro got a product that deepened its relationship with hospitality customers, extended the value of its payments ecosystem, and opened a new growth channel in the hospitality segment.
Today, me&u operates across 3,000+ venues in Australia – a market-leading footprint representing approximately 70% of large-scale hospitality venues nationally. Globally, the platform now serves 6,000+ venues and 13 million users, processing over $1 billion in annual transaction value.
Tyro didn’t just need a payments integration built. They needed API integration specialists who could work inside their team, understand their platform architecture, and deliver something production-ready without a multi-year program. That’s exactly what we delivered.
