The gap in Tyro's digital banking offering
Tyro is one of Australia’s leading banks and payments providers, trusted by thousands of businesses across hospitality and retail. Known for combining smart, secure payment solutions with innovative banking services, Tyro helps businesses run more efficiently and deliver better customer experiences.
Despite having a strong mobile app, Tyro had a gap: nearly half of its customers preferred to manage their accounts via desktop. Without a web banking platform, a large segment of customers was underserved – and a significant opportunity for loan origination and account management was being left on the table.
Beyond the platform itself, Tyro lacked the in-house web developers needed to build, deliver and maintain it. They needed a tech team augmentation partner who could move fast, build capability that would last, and deliver something production-ready without a multi-year program of work.
Fintech team augmentation, not outsourcing
Restive provided a tech team augmentation model – embedding web developers, solution architects and delivery leads directly into Tyro’s Melbourne engineering team, working alongside their existing staff from day one.
This is what separates staff augmentation from traditional consulting: our people became Tyro’s people for the duration of the engagement. We stood up in sprints, made decisions with Tyro’s leads, and moved at the pace the project demanded – not the pace of a typical agency engagement.
Web banking platform development
We delivered a fully functional web banking platform in under six months. The platform covers the core workflows Tyro’s business banking customers rely on most: account management, transaction history, payments and loan applications.
The architecture was built for security, performance and long-term maintainability – not just delivery speed. Every decision was made with Tyro’s team in the room, so there were no handover surprises.

UX built for business banking customers
The user experience was designed around the specific workflows of business owners managing finances via desktop. We mapped the key jobs-to-be-done and prioritised clarity over feature density – a platform that gets out of the way and lets customers do what they came to do.
Rather than operating as an external vendor, our team worked inside Tyro’s product and engineering squads from day one. That meant real accountability, not a weekly status call.
Capability transfer, not just delivery
We helped Tyro build the internal capability to own what we delivered. That meant embedding processes, knowledge and team structures alongside the code – so Tyro’s own engineers could extend and maintain the platform from launch day.
If you’re looking for application development support or need to scale your engineering team fast, let’s talk.
The results
The impact was immediate and measurable.
- 101% increase in loan applications in the 12 months following launch
- Loan originations grew from $36.2M to $72.7M – doubling in a 12-month period
- Web banking is now the primary channel for loan applications and processing
- New customer applications up 16% since launch
What started as a gap in Tyro’s digital offering became its most important growth channel.
Tyro didn’t just need a web banking platform. They needed a path from underserved customers to scalable loan origination, a Melbourne-based team they could trust to deliver fast, and the in-house capability to build on it. That’s what we delivered.
